Why it's on our list

Momma Ashley is a BIG fan of Hawaii! Growing up, we spent most of our childhood Christmas mornings on the beaches of Kauai rather than around a Christmas tree. Hawaiian cuisine has always held a special place in our family’s heart, so when it came time to celebrate Momma’s 76th birthday, a luau-themed party was the only way to go—complete with food that reminded us of those sun-soaked family vacations.

Now, while this appetizer isn’t a traditional Hawaiian dish, it’s packed with Pacific Rim flavors and looks right at home on any PuPu Platter. The crispy wonton cup filled with creamy avocado mash and topped with sweet-and-spicy chili sauce is the perfect vacation-inspired bite. Pair it with a Mai Tai, and you’ll be hula dancing in no time!

Ingredients

  • 24 wonton wrappers

  • 1 TLBS avocado or vegetable oil

  • 1 LB peeled and deveined shrimp (tails removed)

  • 1/4 Sweet Chili Sauce ( we love Mother In Law Kimchi Chili Fermented Sauce)

  • 3 avocados

  • 1/2 lime

  • 1 TLBS lemon juice

  • salt & pepper

  • Sriracha mayo (optional)

Directions

Bake the Wonton Cups

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.

  • Lightly spray a 24-cup mini muffin tin with cooking spray.

  • Press one wonton wrapper into each cup, gently folding the edges to form a little “bowl.”

  • Bake for 7–9 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp. Remove from oven and let cool completely.

Make the Avocado Mash

  • In a small bowl, mash avocados with lime juice, salt, and pepper until smooth but slightly chunky.

Prepare the Shrimp

  • Chop shrimp into small bite-sized pieces.

  • In a skillet heat oil over medium heat, sauté shrimp for 2 minutes,

  • When shrimp is starting to turn pink, add sweet chili sauce and continue cooking shrimp incorporating the chili sauce for another minute or until shrimp in cooked. Finish with a hearty squeeze of lemon juice and remove from heat and let cool slightly.

Assemble the Cups

  • Spoon about 1 teaspoon of avocado mash into each wonton cup.

  • Top with a spoonful of the chili-glazed shrimp.

  • Drizzle with sriracha mayo (optional) for a spicy kick.

Serve & Enjoy These bite-sized cups are best served fresh the same day—perfect for parties, PuPu platters, or happy hour with a Mai Tai. 🌺🍤
