Grandmother Ahmay's Sloppy Joe's

A classic from our Grandmother with a unique flavor!

Ahmay's Sloppy Joe's

Why it's on our list

Momma Ashley grew up on this old school recipe that is as easy as it is delicious. She claims that she made Sloppy Joe's every Halloween during our childhood, yet neither of us have any recollection of this tradition. We do remember Momma making this in the winter time and loving that it was a fun alternative to a hamburger. The secret ingredient that makes this recipe far superior to others is the addition of ground cloves which gives the Sloppy Joe a warmth like no other. It's great for a crowd and freezes beautifully for leftovers.

Ingredients

Makes

  • 1 lb. ground meat

  • 1 c chopped green pepper

  • 2 Tb. yellow mustard

  • 1 Tb. vinegar

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp ground cloves

  • 1 c catsup (this was how it's spelled in the OG. recipe)

  • White hamburger buns

Directions

Brown the meat in a large skillet, add all other ingredients and combine. Simmer for 30 - 45 minutes stirring occasionally. Add water if mixture looks dry.

Butter and grill buns if desired. Top bottom buns with a heaping spoon of Sloppy Joe mixture.

Serve it up!
